The Regas restaurant was established on July 7, 1919 and is a well known icon in the downtown Knoxville area.  Regas is part of a chain of fine restaurant, which includes The Chop House, Chops Grill, and Connors Steak & Seafood.  Our party of 6 visited the Regas restaurant on July 14, 2004 at 6:45 pm for a birthday celebration.  During the month of July, the restaurant was also celebrating it's 85th anniversary in the Knoxville area.  As part of this celebration, each dinner was provided a free slice of red velvet cake.  Reservations are required for this restaurant.  For more information on this restaurant, vist their web site at Regas.

The Regas restaurant has typically been known for it's excellent cuisine, fine dining, and good service.  And the food was indeed well prepared and very good; however, the service was much less than anticipated for a restaurant of this caliber.  Our server was not very friendly, helpful, or attentive and her lenghly ponytail kept smacking our diners when she turned from person to person and from table to table.  We can only hope that she was new at the job.  The menu selection was also wrather limited with each item demanding a moderately high price.  The atmosphere and facilities are consistent with old Knoxville dinning.  Upon entering the restaurant you encounter a mixed smoking/non-smoking reception area with very limited seating outside the fairly impressive bar.  Complimentary cheese and crackers were available in the reception area, but the limited seating and mixed smoking/non-smoking area made this offering less appealing.  Once inside the main dining area, the restaurant's capacity is quite large due to the crowded layout and close packing arrangement of the tables and chairs.  The overall combination of the fairly low lighting level throughout the restaurant, odd music playing over the sound system, and loud talking of the patrons in near-by tables served to further detract from our dining experience.  While the food was excellent, the atmosphere and poor level of service combined to significantly reduce our level or satisfaction with this restaurant.
